Two bolted plates under tension with alternative arrangements of bolt holes are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The hole diameter, pitch, and gauge length are \(d\), \(p\), and \(g\), respectively. Which one of the following conditions must be ensured to have higher net tensile capacity of configuration shown in Figure 2 than that shown in Figure 1?
- p² > 2gd
- p² < 4gd
- p² > 4gd
- p > 4gd
Correct answer: p² > 4gd
Solution
For staggered bolt holes, the net width includes a correction term \(\frac{p^2}{4g}\). Figure 2 has higher net tensile capacity than Figure 1 only when this gain outweighs the additional hole loss. That condition simplifies to \(p^2>4gd\).
