One percent of the people of country X are taller than 6 ft. Two percent of the people of country Y are taller than 6 ft. There are three as many people in country X as in country Y. Taking both countries together, what is the percentage of people taller than 6 ft?

1. 3.0

4. 1.25

Correct answer: 1.25

Solution

Let Y have N people, X have 3N. Tall = 0.01(3N) + 0.02(N) = 0.05N out of 4N total. Percentage = 0.05N/4N x 100 = 1.25%.
