A man can row at 8 km/h in still water. If it takes him thrice as long to row upstream as to row downstream, find the stream velocity in km/h.

Correct answer: 4 km/h

Solution

Let stream speed be \(v\). Then downstream speed = \(8+v\) and upstream speed = \(8-v\). Since time is inversely proportional to speed, \(\frac{8-v}{8+v} = \frac{1}{3}\). Solving gives \(v=4\).
